OFTEC (Oil Firing Technical Association) and FPS (Federation of Petroleum Suppliers) have teamed up to tackle the issue of oil tank safety with their latest campaign, ‘Tank Safe’.
Featuring a short information video, the campaign offers advice to the 920,000 oil-heated homeowners across England, Scotland and Wales on important aspects of tank safety and urges consumers to make sure their storage tanks are fit to purpose. Alongside this, additional information and FAQs can be found through a dedicated ‘Tank Safe’ area in the Oilsave website.
The campaign comes in response to feedback from OFTEC registered heating oil technicians which indicates that some of the tanks in use today have reached or are close to, the end of their serviceable design life of 20 years, significantly increasing the risk of costly oil leaks.
As homeowners are responsible for their own tank maintenance, however, they are often tempted to delay tank inspections to avoid the perceived costs of a replacement. This is a trend which OFTEC and FPS’s campaign works to counter by instead encouraging homeowners to replace aging tanks with newer bunded models.
