I’m new to Heating Oil – what’s next?

If you have just moved into a new house which uses home heating oil, instead of the mains gas you are used to, you probably have a number of questions.

Don’t worry, you are now one of the 1.5 million users of domestic or home heating oil across the UK and whilst the transition may seem daunting at first, once you know the basics you will see there’s no need for concern.

Hopefully you will find answers to all of your questions below:

What is heating oil?
Heating oil is a liquid petroleum product and is usually known as kerosene. In communities that are not connected to the natural gas network, a tank near the property stores the fuel responsible for heating and hot water. Kerosene can also fuel range cookers such as Aga cookers and Rayburns.

How do I get heating oil delivered?
Heating oil is delivered by road tanker and pumped directly into the oil tank located on your property, which then pipes the oil into your home. During the quieter (spring and summer) months the time between ordering and receiving your oil will usually be around 7 days or less. When the demand is greater (during the winter months, especially when the weather is at it’s most severe) then you must expect to wait longer for your delivery. For this reason it is sensible to ensure you order well before the cold weather arrives.

How much oil do I need to order?
It is important to note that the minimum amount of heating oil you can order is 500 litres, so you need to be certain your tank will hold this quantity before placing your order. If it’s your first time ordering then the previous owner may be able to advise you, or if you contact us we can check when we last delivered to your property. It is always worth ordering more if you can, because the price of each litre of oil will usually be quite a lot cheaper when you order in greater quantities. Your tank may have a plaque or a number embossed into the plastic indicating the total capacity.

You can also fit a monitor to warn you when your heating oil supplies are running low. Click here for more information about our tank monitoring service.

How do I pay for my home heating oil?
Heating oil is generally paid for at the time you make your order. Many of our customers find it particularly helpful to be able to spread the cost of their heating bills evenly throughout the year. You can find out more about our budget account here.

What can I do to prevent the theft of oil?
Because heating oil tanks can be vulnerable to oil theft, you can take some simple steps to ensure that your oil is sufficiently safeguarded. There is a useful oil theft prevention article here which includes all the advice you need to consider.

What specification is the heating oil you supply?

Our kerosene heating oil exceeds UK specification requirements. See our Kerosene Data Sheet for more details.

WP Heating is now proud to be able to supply Advanced Kerosene. This premium grade heating oil maximises heating oil output efficiency and minimises consumption.

What type of oil do I need?
Our standard domestic heating oil is kerosene (28 second oil). For most domestic properties and for nearly all oil-fired boilers this will be the right grade for you. We can also supply an Advanced Kerosene which maximises heating oil output efficiency and minimises consumption.

A small percentage of domestic homes may still run off Gas Oil (Red Diesel, 35 second oil). You can check which oil your system needs by checking previous delivery tickets or invoices or by checking the colour of the oil inside the tank.

If you own an Aga, Rayburn or other oil-fired range cooker you should consider Cooker Kerosene; particularly if you have had issues with ‘coking up’ or if you suffer with poor temperature control.

Reduce Your Heating Bills
A few ideas that may help reduce your heating bills and help you do your bit for the environment.
Most of the following tips will seem like common sense and you may well be doing some of them already, but even if you only take away one new thing it will have been worth reading.
• Buy your heating oil during the warmer months of the year to enjoy off-peak rates
• Sign-up to an automated ordering account such as Heating Plus to avoid costly emergency deliveries
• If you are too warm turn your thermostats down rather than open a window
• Make sure you aren’t blocking your radiator with large items of furniture
• Make sure radiators are turned off in rooms you aren’t occupying
• Insulate your lofts and your walls
• Use a chimney balloon to stop cold air coming down your chimney when the fire is off
• Putting tin-foil behind your radiator will stop the heat from being absorbed by the wall and reflect the heat back into the room
• Make sure your boiler is serviced regularly

Ensure your delivery before Christmas
Unsurprisingly Christmas is one of the busiest times of year for WP Heating. The weather is colder, and homes are preparing for the arrival of family and friends.

This increase in order volume inevitably leads to longer deliver windows. We recommend that you place an order by the 30th of November to ensure your delivery is made in plenty of time. Better still, by ordering early you can enjoy our early-bird offers and discounts.

Preventing Theft

How do I prevent oil theft?
Here are a few things you may want to consider to make it difficult for oil thieves:
• If installing a new oil tank, try and situate it somewhere where it cannot easily be spotted from the road. Consider building a fence or trellis to hide it from prying eyes. Do make sure you leave enough access for deliveries!
• If you have gates, make sure you keep them locked when you are away from the property and at night.
• If possible, fit a strong lock to the filling cap to stop people using the filling point as access for a syphon; although be aware that plastic tanks can be drilled!
• Consider placing a security light overlooking your tank; this is activated if there is movement near your tank.
• Fitting a device like the Tank Monitoring to your tank will alert you if the oil level drops rapidly.
Whilst none of the above will guarantee you don’t become a victim of oil theft, use as many of these tactics to make life difficult for the would-be thief and perhaps they will decide to go elsewhere.
